Parental burnout is a prevalent issue that many parents are facing today. According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory, nearly half of parents report feeling overwhelmed by daily stress. For mothers, the traditional self-care practices often fall short of providing real relief. In response to this, Calm, a leading mental health platform, has launched a new initiative called Not Calm Moms. This initiative aims to redefine maternal mental health by focusing on community support rather than unattainable ideals of serenity.

Not Calm Moms features voices like comedian and mom Ilana Glazer and incorporates research from experts like California Surgeon General Dr. Diana Ramos and author Jennifer Wallace. The initiative emphasizes the importance of genuine connections, open conversations, and meaningful support for mothers.

One of the key aspects of Not Calm Moms is the focus on building a supportive community for mothers. Rather than promoting individual self-care practices, the initiative provides spaces for mothers to connect, share their experiences, and support each other. By hosting Rage Rooms, creating online communities, and facilitating peer support, Calm aims to fill the void of supportive networks that many mothers lack in modern parenting.

Research shows that feeling valued and seen is crucial for mental health, especially for mothers. Not Calm Moms addresses the issue of maternal burnout by emphasizing the importance of relationships and community support. By providing mothers with opportunities to connect and feel appreciated, the initiative aims to improve not only the mental health of mothers but also the well-being of their families.

The culture of perfectionism and unrealistic standards that many mothers face today can contribute to increased anxiety, depression, and isolation. Not Calm Moms seeks to counteract this culture by normalizing imperfection and creating a space for mothers to be authentic and vulnerable. By validating the messy and challenging aspects of motherhood, the initiative aims to support mothers in building resilience and well-being.

Dr. Diana Ramos, California’s Surgeon General, views Not Calm Moms as a vital resource for filling gaps in traditional maternal healthcare. By providing mothers with emotional support and meaningful connections, the initiative addresses the overlooked need for community-based care. Ramos emphasizes the importance of social support in reducing burnout and depression among mothers, especially for those facing additional barriers like limited access to healthcare and financial stress.

Ultimately, Not Calm Moms is working towards a future where community-based resources, peer support, and integrated mental health services are standard care for mothers. By normalizing conversations about maternal mental health, the initiative aims to dismantle stigma and create pathways for support, empathy, and healing. The goal is to ensure that every mother feels validated, seen, and cared for in their journey through motherhood.
