The case of Dr. Zvi Levran, also known as the “hockey doc,” has shocked the Detroit area as he was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison for sexual assault and other crimes involving both adults and teenagers. The victims recounted harrowing experiences of being groped during sports physicals and treatment for injuries, as well as being subjected to inappropriate behavior like showering together after workouts. One man even shared how Levran performed oral sex on him during an appointment for a hip injury.

The allegations against Levran have drawn comparisons to another notorious Michigan sports doctor, Larry Nassar, who is currently serving time for assaulting teens and young women, including Olympic gymnasts. Levran, 68, recently pleaded no contest to 28 crimes in Oakland County, including third-degree criminal sexual conduct. This plea is treated as a conviction at sentencing, and Levran will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in custody.

During his court appearance, Levran remained silent, acknowledging the impact of his actions on the victims. The prosecutor, Karen McDonald, commended the courage of the victims who came forward, stating that their bravery prevented Levran from abusing more individuals in the future.

One victim, a 29-year-old woman, shared with Judge Yasmine Poles the lasting effects of the trauma she endured at the hands of Levran. She expressed how it continues to haunt her but emphasized that he no longer holds power over her.

The images of Levran in court, dressed in an orange prison uniform, being escorted out after his sentencing, serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of his actions. The sentencing of Levran serves as a warning to other predators and a message of empowerment to survivors of sexual abuse. The justice system has spoken, holding Levran accountable for his reprehensible conduct and offering some semblance of closure to the victims who bravely stepped forward to seek justice.
