Google Play Store Sees Decline in Apps

Over the past year, Google has been cracking down on apps in its Android app store, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of available apps. According to a report from JS, the Google Play Store has seen a drop from 3.4 million apps to around 1.8 million apps, marking a 47% decrease in app availability for Android users.

While Google has been cutting down on apps, Apple’s iOS App Store has experienced a slight increase in the number of apps available, growing from 1.6 million to 1.64 million apps during the same time period.

Reasons Behind the Disappearance of Android Apps

One of the main reasons for the decline in Android apps is Google’s effort to combat poor-quality and scamming apps on the Play Store. The sheer volume of apps has made it challenging for legitimate developers to stand out among the crowd.

To address this issue, Google raised its minimum requirements for apps in July 2024, leading to the removal of apps with “limited functionality and content.” This move aimed to improve the overall quality of apps available on the platform.

Google’s Response to the App Decline

Google has taken steps to address the issue of harmful apps on the Play Store by investing in AI threat detection and implementing stronger privacy measures. As a result, the company has rejected over 2.36 million apps and banned more than 158,000 developer accounts to prevent the distribution of potentially harmful or policy-violating apps.

Despite the decline in app numbers, there has been a 7.1% increase in app releases year-on-year as of April. This may indicate a resurgence of high-quality apps and games on the platform, signaling a shift towards a more secure and reliable app environment for Android users.
