A pivotal moment occurred during the second day of Karen Read’s murder retrial as witness Jennifer McCabe took the stand and delivered shocking testimony that left the courtroom in disbelief. McCabe revealed that she overheard Read confessing to a first responder that she had hit her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, before his lifeless body was discovered in the snow.

The retrial, which commenced on April 28, sees Read facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a vehicle under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. This comes after a mistrial was declared in her first trial due to the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous verdict.

Prosecutors allege that Read intentionally struck O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, with her Lexus SUV after a night out in Canton, Massachusetts, and callously left him to perish in the cold as a snowstorm loomed. On the other hand, Read’s defense team contends that she has been unfairly targeted and is the victim of a cover-up, suggesting that someone else is responsible for O’Keefe’s demise.

Jennifer McCabe’s involvement in the case is significant as she was with Read at a local bar leading up to O’Keefe’s death and was present when his body was found. During her testimony, McCabe recounted seeing Read’s SUV parked outside her sister’s residence but noted that Read never entered the house. She reached out to O’Keefe via text, but received no response, prompting concern.

In the early hours of the morning, McCabe received a call from O’Keefe’s niece, during which she could hear Read wailing in the background. Read allegedly informed McCabe that she and O’Keefe had a disagreement, and she had left him at the bar, but he never returned home.

McCabe further revealed that Read expressed uncertainty about her actions, questioning if she had struck O’Keefe, and mentioned cracking her taillight earlier that evening. Following the call, Read arrived at McCabe’s residence, and together with a woman named Kerry Roberts, they drove to McCabe’s sister’s house to search for O’Keefe.

Upon arriving at the location, McCabe recalled Read becoming hysterical, demanding to be let out of the car, and shouting upon seeing O’Keefe’s lifeless body. McCabe’s 911 call was played in court, capturing Read’s distressed state as she anxiously inquired about O’Keefe’s condition.

During cross-examination, Read’s defense team attempted to raise doubts about McCabe’s credibility by highlighting her ties to law enforcement, including her brother-in-law, a Boston police officer who owned the residence where O’Keefe’s body was discovered. However, McCabe stood firm in her account, maintaining that the witnesses did not need to be separated as they were predominantly family members.

As the trial unfolds, the shocking revelations and emotional testimonies continue to unravel the tragic events surrounding John O’Keefe’s untimely death. The courtroom remains gripped by the unfolding drama as the quest for justice intensifies in this high-profile case.
