An Indianapolis Man Receives 9-Year Sentence for Shooting Innocent Bystander in Chicago

An Indianapolis man, Gregory Mulkey, 33, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle in Chicago. The sentence was handed down by Judge Aleksandra Gillespie.

The incident took place in September 2023 when Mulkey drove from Indianapolis to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment building in Albany Park, Chicago. Mulkey, who had recently been broken up with, confronted a man in a car behind the building, accusing him of being involved with his ex. When the man drove away, Mulkey attempted to hold onto the side of the car.

Neighbors called 911 after witnessing Mulkey’s erratic behavior and yelling outside the building. Minutes later, Mulkey returned to the scene with a handgun and fired shots. An innocent bystander, a 20-year-old woman who was cleaning outside her home, was struck in the foot by a bullet. The woman, who had no connection to Mulkey or his ex, required seven stitches and suffered severe nerve and tissue damage.

After firing the shots, Mulkey hid near a school before returning to the apartment building and firing another round. Police arrived at the scene and found Mulkey, who had initially claimed someone had shot at him, in possession of a gun. Further evidence, including a bullet matching the one found at the crime scene, was also discovered.

Gregory Mulkey’s sentence will be reduced for good behavior and credited with the time he has already spent in custody awaiting trial. Despite his plea, Mulkey’s actions have had lasting consequences for the innocent bystander who was injured in the incident.
