Microsoft unveiled a series of new “open” AI models on Wednesday, with the most advanced model being on par with OpenAI’s o3-mini on a key benchmark. These new models, all released under permissive licenses, belong to the Phi 4 family and focus on reasoning capabilities to enhance problem-solving in AI applications.

The Phi 4 mini reasoning model, trained on a dataset of 1 million synthetic math problems, is geared towards educational purposes such as embedded tutoring on lightweight devices. With approximately 3.8 billion parameters, this model aims to enhance mathematical learning experiences for users. Parameters play a critical role in determining a model’s problem-solving abilities, with larger parameter counts typically leading to better performance.

On the other hand, the Phi 4 reasoning model, boasting 14 billion parameters, leverages high-quality web data and curated demonstrations from OpenAI to excel in math, science, and coding tasks. It is tailored for applications requiring complex reasoning and problem-solving skills. Additionally, the Phi 4 reasoning plus model is an adaptation of the Phi-4 model, fine-tuned for improved accuracy on specific tasks. Despite having fewer parameters than some competing models, Phi 4 reasoning plus has demonstrated comparable performance levels, matching o3-mini on the OmniMath test.

These new Phi 4 models are now accessible on the AI development platform Hugging Face, along with detailed technical documentation. Microsoft emphasizes that the models strike a balance between size and performance, achieved through techniques like distillation, reinforcement learning, and utilizing high-quality data. This balance allows the models to retain strong reasoning capabilities while remaining compact enough for efficient execution on resource-constrained devices.

In a blog post, Microsoft highlighted the significance of these models in enabling complex reasoning tasks to be performed efficiently even in low-latency environments. The company’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities through these new models underscores its dedication to empowering developers and users with cutting-edge technology.
