WhatsApp Surpasses 3 Billion Monthly Users, Key Platform for Meta’s AI Strategy

During Meta’s Q1 results conference call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that WhatsApp now boasts over 3 billion monthly active users. Acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, WhatsApp remains ad-free and continues to be a popular messaging app among users worldwide. This recent milestone cements WhatsApp as one of the few apps alongside Facebook to surpass the 3 billion user mark.

With such a vast user base, WhatsApp plays a pivotal role in Meta’s AI strategy. The company has emphasized that the app serves as a significant distribution platform for its AI services. Meta’s CFO, Susan Li, highlighted that WhatsApp sees the highest usage of Meta AI among all of the company’s apps, with most users engaging with AI features through one-on-one chats.

While WhatsApp facilitates easy access to AI capabilities, Meta has faced challenges in driving adoption of its AI products in markets like the U.S., where traditional messaging apps are preferred. To address this, Meta recently launched the Meta AI app to establish itself as a leader in the U.S. messaging market.

Despite this, Zuckerberg acknowledged the need to continue enhancing AI experiences across all platforms. The company’s focus on AI is evident in the growth of WhatsApp Business, which has contributed significantly to Meta’s overall revenue. WhatsApp Business offers a platform for businesses to engage with customers and leverage Meta’s AI tools.
