A tragic incident unfolded in Edgewater last month when a man was found shot near a condo building. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has now determined that the man, identified as Darvis Dennis, accidentally shot himself in the leg.
The incident occurred on April 22 when the condo building doorman called 911 after hearing a gunshot in the 6000 block of North Sheridan. Another employee discovered blood and other items in a hallway, prompting a search by Chicago police. Dennis was found outside, suffering from a gunshot wound to his right thigh. Despite being responsive when officers arrived, he later succumbed to his injuries at St. Francis Hospital.
Initially, the case was under investigation to determine how the shooting occurred. Following an autopsy, the medical examiner has ruled Dennis’ death as an accident due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the right thigh.
