Can Fossil Fuel Companies Finally Be Held Accountable for Climate Damage?

New Scientist. Science news and long reads from expert journalists, covering developments in science, technology, health and the environment on the website and the magazine.

In Germany, a groundbreaking climate lawsuit is nearing its conclusion this month. The case dates back a decade when Peruvian farmer Saúl Luciano Lliuya initiated legal action against the German energy corporation RWE. Lliuya argued that RWE’s substantial contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions has made the company accountable for a portion of the heightened flood risk on his property.

While the outcome of Lliuya’s case remains uncertain, the significance lies in the broader implications it carries. This lawsuit challenges the traditional impunity enjoyed by fossil fuel companies for the environmental consequences of their operations.

The verdict in this case could set a precedent for holding corporations accountable for their role in climate change and its associated damages. It raises critical questions about corporate responsibility, environmental justice, and the urgent need for sustainable business practices.
