In a bold move, Donald Trump has proposed $163 billion in cuts to federal spending in his latest budget blueprint. The budget aims to eliminate programs that the administration deems as “woke,” “wasteful,” or “weaponized against ordinary working Americans.” Non-defense spending would be slashed by 22.6%, marking the lowest level since 2017, while defense spending would see a significant increase.

The budget proposal targets foreign aid, healthcare, education, and environmental programs, reflecting the administration’s focus on reducing government expenditure. Russ Vought, head of the Office of Management and Budget, criticized current spending as prioritizing niche organizations and institutions promoting radical ideologies contrary to American values.

Trump’s budget plan aligns with his efforts to shrink the federal government and reduce bureaucracy. However, the proposed cuts may face opposition in Congress, where the Republican party holds a slim majority. While some lawmakers support Trump’s budget as a “bold blueprint,” others like Susan Collins have raised concerns about certain elements.

The budget proposal outlines discretionary spending priorities, excluding long-term mandatory spending like Social Security and Medicare. Foreign aid would see a significant reduction, with the closure of USAID and cuts to renewable energy grants. Additionally, funding for agencies like the National Institutes of Health and FEMA would be reduced, citing concerns of weaponization.

In contrast, the budget calls for increased spending on the military and border security to address illegal immigration. The defense budget would rise by 13%, while homeland security would receive a 65% increase. Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer criticized the budget as “heartless” and pledged to oppose efforts to incorporate it into legislation.
