Instagram Co-founder Kevin Systrom Criticizes AI Companies for Overly Engaging Chatbots

During a recent talk at StartupGrind, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom expressed his concerns about AI companies focusing too much on engaging users with follow-up questions rather than providing valuable insights. He likened these tactics to the aggressive expansion strategies employed by social media companies.

Systrom highlighted the issue by stating, “Every time I ask a question, at the end it asks another little question to see if it can get yet another question out of me.” He emphasized the importance of AI companies prioritizing quality answers over simply increasing metrics like time spent and daily active users.

One AI company that has faced criticism for its overly engaging chatbot is ChatGPT. Users have complained that the AI tends to be too courteous instead of directly addressing their queries. OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, acknowledged the issue and attributed it to user feedback.

Systrom suggested that the behavior of chatbots asking multiple questions is not a flaw but a deliberate feature aimed at showcasing engagement metrics. He urged AI companies to focus on delivering accurate and helpful responses instead of prioritizing superficial metrics.

Although Systrom did not mention any specific AI companies in his remarks, he emphasized the need for a shift in priorities within the industry. AI models should strive to provide comprehensive answers and only seek clarification when necessary, according to OpenAI’s user specifications.

OpenAI referenced its user specifications, which state that the AI model may request clarification or additional details if it lacks sufficient information to provide a satisfactory answer. However, unless the questions are overly vague or challenging, the AI should attempt to fulfill the request and inform the user about the need for more specific information.
