The Defence Minister, Judith Collins, has revealed that $2 billion from the Budget will be allocated to replace the aging maritime helicopters of the Defence Force. This announcement was made alongside Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base in Auckland.

Collins emphasized that the replacement of the Seasprite helicopters will not only modernize the fleet but also enhance the navy’s capacity to assist in non-combat missions such as humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts.

Furthermore, she highlighted that this investment is part of a larger plan to upgrade the Defence Force, with a total of $12 billion earmarked over the next four years. This commitment includes a $957 million injection into Defence Force activities, personnel, and infrastructure.

More details on these investments will be disclosed when the Budget is presented on 22 May. Collins stressed the importance of national security in the face of escalating global tensions, underscoring the need for equipping Defence personnel with the necessary tools and resources.

She underscored the significance of maritime capabilities for a nation like New Zealand, noting that the new helicopters will have increased range and payload capacity, essential for safeguarding the country and its citizens.

The $957 million investment in Defence will be spread out over four years, with allocations for operational activities, personnel allowances, international deployments, engagement with global partners, and estate maintenance to improve living and working conditions for Defence personnel.

Collins concluded by stating that New Zealand cannot ignore the growing global uncertainties and that this announcement is just the initial step towards strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
