The latest analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reveals that a significant number of U.S. adults with private insurance could potentially benefit from GLP-1 drugs. The report indicates that approximately 42% of adults under the age of 65 could meet the clinical criteria for these medications, which are commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, obesity, and weight-related health issues.

While only a small percentage of adults with employer-sponsored coverage had prescriptions for GLP-1 drugs in 2022, the demand for these medications is on the rise. However, due to the high costs associated with GLP-1 drugs, insurers and employers may impose stricter eligibility standards for coverage than those recommended by the FDA. Many private plans limit coverage of these drugs to diabetes treatment and exclude coverage for weight management.

The use of GLP-1 drugs, including popular brands like Wegovy, Rybelsus, Saxenda, Ozempic, and Zepbound, is projected to be a significant driver of employer health costs. According to data from benefits consultancy Aon, these medications could contribute to a 1% increase in total premium expenses for 2025.

Insurers have cited the growing utilization of GLP-1 drugs as a factor in rising premiums for health coverage. As individuals review their benefits during open enrollment for the upcoming year, they may encounter restrictions on coverage for these medications. Many ACA Marketplace plans only cover GLP-1 drugs for diabetes treatment and not for weight management.

It’s important to note that while a large number of adults may qualify for GLP-1 drugs based on clinical criteria, not all individuals who meet these standards will choose to use these medications. Factors such as personal preferences, alternative treatments, and lifestyle choices may influence the decision to pursue GLP-1 drug therapy.

Overall, the findings from KFF’s analysis highlight the potential impact of GLP-1 drugs on healthcare costs and the importance of understanding coverage options for these medications. As the landscape of healthcare continues to evolve, policymakers, employers, and patients should stay informed about the changing dynamics of prescription drug coverage.
