New York Senators Condemn Trump Administration’s Cuts to World Trade Center Health Program

New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand strongly criticized President Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for their actions to dismantle the World Trade Center Health Program, calling it “cruel” and “jeopardizing the healthcare of heroes.”

During a press conference, the senators expressed their dismay over the abrupt firing of 16 doctors and staff associated with the program, highlighting the Trump administration’s alleged intent to gut the vital program that provides medical treatment and research for over 137,000 responders and survivors of the 9/11 attacks.

Senator Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, condemned the late-night firings of WTCHP personnel, stating that it revealed the administration’s true intentions. He emphasized the impact of these cuts on the healthcare of 9/11 survivors and responders.

In response to the recent staff cuts, Senator Gillibrand emphasized the bipartisan effort that went into establishing the program, which aids thousands of individuals affected by 9/11-related health issues.

Both senators vowed to oppose any federal budget that does not fully fund the program, urging New York House Republicans to take action and ensure the program’s funding is restored.

The program, created in 2005, is facing challenges due to the reduction in staff, leading to delays in cancer treatments for survivors. Survivors like Mariama James, who lost both parents to 9/11-related cancer, expressed frustration over the lack of support and delays in access to care.

Despite the bipartisan support and scientific evidence linking 9/11 survivors to various health conditions, the program’s future remains uncertain as the Trump administration continues to make cuts.

Senator Schumer called on lawmakers to prioritize the restoration of funding for the program in upcoming budget negotiations, stressing the importance of keeping the program operational to support those who have sacrificed for their country.
