The upcoming IIHF World Championships will see Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon teaming up with fellow Cole Harbour, NS native Sidney Crosby on Team Canada. Crosby’s confirmation came after the Pittsburgh Penguins missed out on the playoffs this season, while MacKinnon’s decision followed the Avalanche’s disappointing exit in Game 7.

Having already led Team Canada to gold at this season’s 4 Nations Face-Off, Crosby will be making his first appearance at the IIHF World Championships since 2015. MacKinnon, the MVP of the 4 Nations Face-Off, will join a star-studded Canadian team that includes the likes of Travis Konecny, Macklin Celebrini, and Brandon Montour.

The tournament, held in the spring after most professional hockey leagues have concluded their playoffs, will be split between Sweden and Denmark, with Stockholm and Herning serving as host cities. Action kicks off on May 9, with Canada opening their campaign against Slovakia on May 10.

Under the leadership of GM Kyle Dubas and head coach Dean Evason, Team Canada boasts a strong roster featuring NHL talents such as Bo Horvat, Adam Fantalli, and Ryan O’Reilly. With Dylan Garand currently the sole goaltender named to the squad, two more netminders are expected to be added before the tournament begins.

Looking to secure their third World Championship in five years, Canada will aim to build on their gold medal wins in 2021 and 2023. The team’s quest for success will be supported by assistant coaches Ryan Huska, Andrew Brunette, and Steve McCarthy.

The revamped Canadian squad will face tough competition from the likes of Finland and Czechia, the latter having clinched their first title in over a decade in 2022. With a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, Team Canada is primed to make a strong push for glory at the upcoming IIHF World Championships.
