Standing Up for Science and Education in the Face of Adversity

Contributed by Dr. Jonathan Riehl

Since taking office on January 20, 2025, the new administration has launched a relentless assault on research and education. Funding has been slashed or completely cut off, words and topics deemed controversial have been banned from research, and critical public data has been erased. Innocent students have faced visa revocations and even abductions by government officials. The scope and impact of these attacks have been staggering.

In recent weeks, we have witnessed the US National Science Foundation terminating grants related to misinformation and diversity initiatives, while Harvard University has had billions in federal funding frozen for standing up against unlawful demands. Essential programs like the coal miners’ health screening have been shut down, and climate and space science funding is facing severe reductions. The chaos and uncertainty have left the scientific community reeling.

In a recent interview on WXXI NPR News Radio, New York Assemblymember Jen Lunsford highlighted the arbitrary nature of the attacks on research and education funding, pointing out how specific words or topics can trigger a halt in vital programs. This irrational approach has left scientists frustrated and struggling to navigate the current landscape.

Preserving Our Values in Science

Despite the challenges we face, it is crucial to uphold our values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in science and education. These principles not only make us stronger and more innovative but also ensure a more just and equitable society. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated, “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” We must defend these values at all costs.

To reaffirm our commitment to these core principles, we have crafted the Pledge for Progress. This pledge serves as a declaration of our dedication to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice in our work. It provides a roadmap for upholding these values in the face of political interference and regressive policies.

Taking a Stand

We urge all scientists and professionals in STEAM fields to sign the pledge and join us in building a united front to protect science, education, and justice. By standing together and upholding our values, we can resist unethical directives and ensure that our work benefits all members of society. Let us not be silenced in the face of adversity but rather unite in our commitment to progress and inclusivity.

Now is the time to act. Sign the pledge and help us defend the principles that are fundamental to our work and our society. Together, we are stronger.

The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new advancements and innovations being made every day. One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work, with applications in a wide range of industries, from healthcare to finance to transportation.

One of the key areas where AI is making a big impact is in the field of robotics. Robots have long been used in industries such as manufacturing and logistics, but with the introduction of AI, they are becoming smarter and more capable than ever before. AI-powered robots are now being used in a wide range of applications, from assisting with surgery in hospitals to performing complex tasks in warehouses.

One of the key advantages of AI-powered robots is their ability to learn and adapt to new situations. Traditional robots are programmed to perform specific tasks, but AI-powered robots can learn from their experiences and improve their performance over time. This means that they can be more flexible and versatile, able to handle a wider range of tasks and environments.

In the healthcare industry, AI-powered robots are being used to assist with surgery and other medical procedures. These robots are able to perform tasks with a level of precision and accuracy that is unmatched by human surgeons, reducing the risk of errors and complications. They can also work faster and more efficiently, helping to reduce waiting times for patients and improve overall outcomes.

In the field of transportation, AI-powered robots are being used to improve safety and efficiency. Self-driving cars, for example, use AI algorithms to navigate roads and avoid obstacles, making them safer and more reliable than human drivers. These robots are also able to communicate with each other, helping to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

In the field of manufacturing, AI-powered robots are being used to automate tasks that were once done by humans. These robots are able to work faster and more accurately than their human counterparts, helping to improve productivity and reduce costs. They can also be programmed to work around the clock, allowing companies to increase their output without having to hire additional workers.

Overall, AI-powered robots are poised to revolutionize the way we live and work. With their ability to learn and adapt, they have the potential to transform a wide range of industries, making processes more efficient and effective. As the technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more exciting applications of AI-powered robots in the future.
