Chicago Police Officers Fatally Shoot Man Wielding Knife

Chicago police officers fatally shot a man who was moving toward them with a knife after their Tasers failed to stop his advance, according to a statement released by CPD on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at a supportive living facility in the 1400 block of East 75th Street around 2:23 a.m. following a 911 call reporting a resident threatening another resident with a butcher knife.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers requested backup about 14 minutes later, specifying that it was “not an emergency.” Thirteen minutes after that request, the officers reported firing shots and requested an ambulance for the man.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), responsible for investigating shootings involving CPD officers, responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

In an official statement, CPD provided the following details:

CHICAGO – On Monday, May 5, 2025, at approximately 2:50 a.m., Chicago Police officers responded to a call of a person with a knife threatening residents inside of a multi-unit building in the 1400 block of E. 75th St. (3rd District). Officers located the unit where the male offender resided and attempted to speak with him. After gaining access, they were confronted by the offender, who was armed with a knife. Officers then deployed their Tasers, which failed to subdue the offender. The offender, who remained armed, continued to advance at officers, at which time officers discharged their weapons, striking the offender. The offender was pronounced on scene. A knife was recovered. The Investigative Response Team is on the scene investigating.

Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.

The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days. This matter remains under investigation and all further inquiries can be directed to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability at (312) 746-3609.
