Einstein’s Message to Trump: A Lesson in Morality and Science
By Alexander Soifer
Germany, once a beacon of science, took a dark turn on January 31, 1933, when Adolf Hitler rose to power. The Nazi regime dismissed Jewish professors and students, burned books, and prioritized loyalty to Nazism over professionalism and talent. Albert Einstein, a top European scholar saved by America, faced similar challenges in his time. His groundbreaking work on the general theory of relativity was rejected by many German physicists who labeled it as “Jewish Physics.” Despite this opposition, Einstein continued to speak out against the Nazi regime, setting an example for scientists facing political threats today.
In the current political climate, scientists are once again under attack, with the Trump administration undermining climate science and cutting funding for research. Einstein’s courage in standing up to the Nazis serves as a reminder that scientists have a responsibility to speak out against injustice and defend the integrity of their work. As nearly 2,000 members of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine protested the administration’s attacks on science, it is clear that the scientific community must unite to protect the nation’s research enterprise.
Einstein’s legacy extends beyond his scientific achievements to his unwavering commitment to morality. In a letter to a minister in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1950, he emphasized the importance of striving for morality in our actions, stating that only morality can give beauty and dignity to life. This message holds true today as the Trump administration faces criticism for its unethical policies and disregard for scientific evidence.
Rather than warping science to fit political agendas, the Trump administration must heed Einstein’s wisdom and prioritize morality in its actions. By listening to the voices of scientists and upholding the values of truth and justice, the administration can avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and ensure a future where science and culture thrive. Einstein’s message to Trump is clear: embrace morality, uphold science, and protect the future of our nation.
