Singapore Becomes Home to Gates Foundation Office

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced its plans to open an office in Singapore to enhance collaborations with governments, philanthropies, and health research institutions in Southeast Asia.
During the Philanthropy Asia Summit in Singapore, Bill Gates, the billionaire cofounder of Microsoft, mentioned, “The Gates Foundation is putting up an office here to access the science [and] to partner with the philanthropic community.” Gates also had a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, discussing various challenges including clean energy and vaccine development.
Supported by Singapore’s Economic Development Board, the establishment of the office in the city state aims to accelerate progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Jermaine Loy, managing director of EDB, stated, “Singapore’s strategic location and research ecosystem makes it a strong platform for advancing healthcare, fintech, and AI innovations that can deliver impact across the region and the world.”
The Gates Foundation, founded in 2000 by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, focuses on improving global health, access to education, and inclusive economic growth. Hari Menon, director for South and Southeast Asia at the Gates Foundation, expressed excitement about strengthening their presence in Southeast Asia through Singapore. He noted, “Singapore’s leadership in innovation and philanthropy makes it an ideal hub to help scale solutions that improve lives across the region and beyond.”
