The autonomous navigation market is on a steady rise, with ships incorporating AI technology to steer themselves, resulting in significant fuel and time savings. Projections indicate that this market is set to exceed $11 billion by 2028, making it a lucrative space for companies involved. One such company making waves in this sector is Orca AI, which recently closed a Series B funding round of $72.5 million, led by Brighton Park Capital, with participation from existing investors Ankona Capital and Hyperlink Ventures. This London-based company has now raised over $111 million, building on the success of a $23 million funding round last year.

The driving force behind this latest funding round can be summed up in one word: defense. Founded in 2018 by CEO Yarden Gross and CTO Dor Raviv, Orca AI leverages AI-powered decision-making and autonomous capabilities to enhance ship navigation. With a marine visual dataset encompassing over 80 million nautical miles, the company aims to reduce collisions significantly and enable ship crews to focus on other aspects of their voyage. Gross emphasized the importance of defense collaborations, highlighting the demand for cost-effective and efficient autonomous assets by navies worldwide. Orca AI has already secured its first contract in the defense sector, deploying its technology on a navy ship.

The company’s growth is further fueled by the expansion of Starlink, enabling real-time data transmission for mapping routes, monitoring traffic, and sharing critical information. Gross sees this partnership as a significant opportunity to collect data at scale directly from ship sensors. Orca AI’s impact is evident, with a 2024 analysis showing a 54% reduction in close encounter events, leading to an average fuel savings of $100,000 per vessel per year.

In addition to Orca AI, other players in the autonomous navigation space include Avikus (a subsidiary of Hyundai HD) and Sea Machines. These companies are also leveraging AI technology to revolutionize ship navigation and drive efficiencies in the maritime industry.

Overall, the autonomous navigation market presents a wealth of opportunities for innovation and growth, with Orca AI at the forefront of developing cutting-edge solutions for safer and more efficient maritime operations. With defense collaborations and technological advancements like Starlink, the company is poised to make a significant impact in the industry in the years to come.
