Kamari Robinson (Chicago Police Department, Google)

Man Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Illegal Firearm Possession

A Chicago man, Kamari Robinson, has been sentenced to four years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm that he used in a fatal shooting in Rogers Park. Although Robinson admitted to shooting and killing another man during a dispute, prosecutors believed it was an act of self-defense and did not charge him with murder.

The incident took place on November 16, 2023, in the 1600 block of West Howard, near the Howard CTA station. Robinson and the victim, Kenneth Sandy, got into a physical altercation, during which Robinson shot Sandy dead. Surveillance footage captured the incident, and Robinson confessed to police that he had fired the fatal shots in self-defense.

Despite the admission, Robinson was only charged with illegally possessing a firearm as a three-time convicted felon. His previous felony convictions include aggravated battery, hate crime, and possessing a controlled substance, all from 2017.

After pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, Robinson was sentenced to four years in prison by Judge Aleksandra Gillespie. He will serve at least 50% of the sentence and will receive a reduction for the time spent wearing an ankle monitor since his arrest, totaling 530 days.

Although the shooting resulted in a tragic loss of life, the legal proceedings centered on Robinson’s unlawful possession of a firearm rather than the act of violence itself. The case highlights the consequences of illegal firearm possession and the impact it can have on individuals and communities.
