An armed man seeking vengeance for the tragic death of his great-grandchildren was fatally shot in a chaotic showdown with deputies outside an Indiana courthouse. The shooter, Mark Vawter, arrived at the Hendricks County Courthouse with the intent of confronting S’Doni Pettis, who was accused of causing a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of Vawter’s young grandchildren during a police chase in February.

In the horrific incident, Pettis, 25, crashed a stolen Honda Civic into a Ford Explorer carrying 3-year-old Ares and 2-month-old Iris, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. Tragically, Iris died at the scene, while Ares, who sustained severe burns, was taken off life support a few days later.

Vawter, armed and unaware that Pettis’ court appearance had been rescheduled, confronted the deputies escorting inmates outside the courthouse. He fired a shot, prompting deputies Zachary Emmitt and Nathan Phillips to return fire, resulting in Vawter’s demise.

In the aftermath of the fatal crash, Vawter expressed his grief and disbelief at the loss of his beloved grandchildren. Neighbors revealed that Vawter had been planning his revenge for weeks leading up to the shootout, indicating a premeditated intent to confront Pettis.

Prosecutors are now advocating for Pettis to attend court hearings remotely and restrict public access to his records to prevent further vigilantism. The Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting, with the deputies involved placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the probe.

The tragic events surrounding the courthouse shooting serve as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the complexities of seeking justice in the face of profound loss.
