In a move that has sent shockwaves through political circles, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has categorized the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is currently leading in opinion polls, as a ‘confirmed’ right-wing extremist organization. This classification has drawn ire from the Trump administration, with President Donald J. Trump himself lambasting Berlin for what he perceives as an anti-democratic maneuver.
This designation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution—a title that belies its true purpose—grants the agency significant latitude to conduct surveillance and harassment against the AfD. To compound matters, the new German government is reportedly contemplating a ban on the party altogether, raising eyebrows and questions about the state of democratic practices in the country.
Prominent figures in the Trump administration have not held back in their critiques. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have both issued sharp rebukes aimed at the German government.

In response to Rubio’s allegations, the German Foreign Office defended its actions:
“This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that right-wing extremism needs to be stopped.”
Meanwhile, Deputy State Secretary Christopher Landau amplified the German response, suggesting that the implications of the surveillance extend beyond mere political rivalry.
In further developments, Republican lawmakers have rallied behind the Trump administration’s stance, proposing actionable strategies to counteract what they see as a politically motivated investigation against the AfD. Senator Tom Cotton, chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, has called for a suspension of intelligence sharing with Germany’s domestic agency, arguing that such cooperation could be misused to target the AfD.

“I understand that liberal elites on both sides of the Atlantic loathe the AfD, but AfD’s platform has resonated with many Germans,” Senator Cotton stated in a letter addressed to Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s Director of National Intelligence.
Germany’s domestic intelligence service classified the AfD on May 2 as an “extremist” group, enabling it to step up monitoring of the country’s biggest opposition party. The AfD responded with a claim that this action constitutes a “blow against democracy” and has initiated legal action.
