Rasean Cummins (Chicago Police Department)

Hit-and-Run Driver with High Blood Alcohol Level Causes Severe Injuries

A recent incident involving a hit-and-run driver in Chicago has shocked the community, as prosecutors revealed that the driver, Rasean Cummins, was operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. The reckless driver was traveling at 83 mph on Division Street moments before colliding with another car, resulting in severe injuries to its driver.

According to court records, Cummins, 28, not only hit a police car and fled the scene but was also on bail for a gun-related case at the time of the incident. Despite being found not guilty in the previous case, Cummins now faces charges related to the hit-and-run incident.

Prosecutors stated that Cummins was driving a blue Tesla Model 3 southbound on North Homan Avenue on December 9, 2023, reaching speeds of 83 mph just before the collision. The impact occurred at Division Street when Cummins allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a 37-year-old woman who was passing through the intersection.

The victim suffered serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis, liver damage, and the loss of four fingers from her right hand. Tests confirmed that Cummins had a blood alcohol level of .227, significantly exceeding the legal limit of .08.

As a result of the incident, Judge Susana Ortiz ordered Cummins to be detained pending trial. He is facing charges of aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm, and misdemeanor leaving the scene.
