Xavier University welcomed Richard Pitino as their new head coach, marking his debut season in the competitive Big East conference. Pitino, known for his focused approach, shrugged off sentimental ties to familiar opponents, including facing his father, Rick Pitino, who coaches St. John’s, and Providence College, his alma mater.

In an interview with Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Pitino emphasized his commitment to the job at hand, stating, “My job is to go do my very, very best to win and to build a sustainable championship program, and it doesn’t matter who we play.” Despite acknowledging the special significance of Providence College in his life, Pitino remains unwavering in his dedication to Xavier’s success.

Hailing from the Northeast, Pitino expressed his long-standing goal of joining the Big East conference, a move that aligns with his impressive coaching record. Previously at New Mexico, Pitino led the Lobos to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, clinching the Mountain West Tournament title in 2024 and the regular season championship in 2025.

The hire of Richard Pitino adds an intriguing storyline to the Big East, as he now shares the conference with his father, Rick Pitino. The elder Pitino reportedly endorsed his son for the Xavier job, setting the stage for a compelling father-son coaching rivalry. Their last encounter in November 2024 saw Rick Pitino’s St. John’s team triumph over New Mexico, foreshadowing the competitive spirit that will define their future matchups.

Taking over a Xavier program eager to reclaim national prominence, Pitino’s arrival signals a new era for the Musketeers. With a focus on building a championship-caliber team, Pitino’s coaching acumen and strategic vision are poised to elevate Xavier’s standing in the Big East and beyond.

The upcoming matchups against familiar foes like St. John’s and Providence College promise high-stakes drama and intense competition, setting the stage for an exciting chapter in Pitino’s coaching journey.
