Google has accidentally leaked details for its upcoming Material 3 Expressive design language. The highly anticipated unveiling is set to take place at the Google I/O 2025 event later this month, alongside the release of Android 16.

The leaked blog post provided insight into the extensive research and development process behind Material 3 Expressive. Google shared that the journey to this new design language began with a simple question from an intern in 2022: “Why were all these apps looking so similar? So boring? Wasn’t there room to dial up the feeling?” This inquiry sparked a series of 46 research studies involving over 18,000 participants, including eye tracking, experiments, and focus groups.

The resulting Material 3 Expressive UI aims to be both visually stunning and highly functional. Google focused on enhancing key actions, improving tap target size, color contrast, and other important elements to make interfaces more user-friendly for all individuals. One standout feature of the new design language is a floating toolbar at the bottom of Google apps, designed to highlight key UI elements.

In a preview of Material 3 Expressive in action, the new Gmail app showcases a larger and more prominent Send button located above the keyboard. This strategic placement emphasizes the importance of this action within the app’s interface.

Overall, Google’s approach to developing Material 3 Expressive centered around prioritizing user feedback and emotions. By engaging with users and understanding their feelings about UI design, Google has crafted a new design language that promises to be both innovative and engaging for users.

As Google prepares to officially unveil Material 3 Expressive at Google I/O 2025, the leaked details have generated excitement and anticipation among tech enthusiasts. Stay tuned for more updates on Google’s latest UI design language and its impact on the future of digital experiences.
