A High-Profile Robbery Leads to Additional Charges for Inmate

A man who was sentenced to 30 years for his involvement in a robbery that resulted in the death of a 73-year-old grandfather and Vietnam vet has now been given an extra four years in prison for his role in a kidnapping incident that occurred while he was awaiting trial in the Cook County jail.

The Initial Crime

In July 2021, Frank Harris, along with 17-year-old DuShawn Williams, attempted to carjack Vietnam vet Keith Cooper in a strip mall parking lot. The robbery turned violent when Harris punched Cooper in the head, causing him to collapse and ultimately pass away.

Despite facing murder charges, Harris pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and received a 30-year prison sentence.

The Kidnapping Incident

While in jail awaiting trial, Harris, along with two other detainees, kidnapped a fellow inmate and held him for ransom. The victim, who was awaiting trial for a double murder, was lured into a bathroom where he was assaulted, bound, and forced to make a ransom call.

The victim managed to alert authorities, and Harris was charged with kidnapping. He has since pleaded guilty and received an additional four-year sentence.

Conclusion

Despite the severity of his crimes, Harris is expected to be paroled in February 2037 after receiving the state’s standard reduction and credits.

This incident highlights the dangers and complexities of the prison system, where even behind bars, individuals can engage in criminal activities. It also underscores the importance of monitoring and maintaining security measures within correctional facilities.

It’s crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing such incidents from occurring and ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff.
