The baseball season is a long and grueling journey, filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. What if this season had started in the middle of July instead of the last week of March? How would that have changed the outlook for the contenders in the sport? Let’s take a closer look at how the second half of the season has impacted some of the teams vying for a postseason spot.

The Good:
– Padres: 30-13
– Diamondbacks: 30-14
– Dodgers: 28-15
– Brewers: 26-17
– Mets: 27-18
– Astros: 25-19
– Royals: 24-20

While these teams have performed well in the second half, there are others that have struggled to maintain their momentum.

The Not So Good:
– Twins: 22-23
– Guardians: 22-23
– Phillies: 22-22
– Orioles: 23-22
– Yankees: 22-20
– Braves: 23-22

Teams like the Phillies and Guardians started the season strong but have faltered in the second half, raising questions about their postseason aspirations. History shows that teams with losing records in the second half rarely make it to the World Series. Only a few exceptions, like the 2006 Cardinals and Tigers, have defied the odds.

The Phillies, once on a 106-win pace, have stumbled in recent weeks, with pitching and offensive struggles contributing to their decline. However, a recent winning streak has shown signs of a turnaround. The Guardians, who led the AL Central by six games in July, have also faced challenges, particularly in their lineup production. Despite recent setbacks, both teams have a chance to bounce back in September.

As the regular season winds down, the focus shifts to maintaining consistency and avoiding prolonged slumps. Teams like the 2006 Tigers have shown that a strong first half can carry a team through rough patches. It’s crucial for players and managers to rekindle their competitive fire and stay focused as they head into the postseason.

In baseball, September isn’t just about the changing leaves; it’s about finding renewed energy and determination to push through the final stretch of the season. As the playoffs loom, teams must rise to the challenge and find their way back on track to compete for a championship.
