Rufus Hunley IV (Chicago Police Department)

An Atlanta Man Disarmed and Beaten After Firing Gun on Red Line Train

An incident on a Red Line train near Sox Park saw an Atlanta man, Rufus Hunley IV, 30, disarmed and beaten by a Chicago resident after unintentionally firing a gun during a confrontation, Chicago police reported.

The altercation occurred around 9:30 p.m. on April 27 when Hunley got into an argument with the Chicago resident while aboard the train. In a self-defense move, the victim punched Hunley in the face, prompting Hunley to pull out a gun and threaten the victim, prosecutors revealed.

During the scuffle for control of the firearm, the gun discharged a round inside the train car, fortunately not causing any injuries. The victim managed to overpower Hunley, disarming him and holding him until police arrived at the scene.

Despite claiming to have a permit to carry firearms, CPD determined that Hunley was not authorized to carry guns in Illinois, leading to his arrest on charges of unlawful possession of a handgun, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and battery.

Prosecutors sought to keep Hunley in custody pending trial, but Judge Mary Marubio decided to release him with strict orders to surrender any firearms to the authorities.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of carrying firearms illegally and the importance of responsible gun ownership.
