Gunman Opens Fire on Police Cruiser During Traffic Stop on Staten Island

A dramatic incident unfolded on Staten Island when a crazed gunman fled a routine traffic stop and opened fire on a police cruiser, shooting through his own windshield in the process. Fortunately, the two officers in the targeted vehicle were unharmed, although they were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries related to shattered glass.

The chaotic events began around 7:30 p.m. when officers pulled over the suspect’s Nissan SUV near 290 Port Richmond Ave for a traffic violation. Instead of complying, the 31-year-old suspect accelerated and attempted to escape the scene.

As he sped away, the suspect encountered another marked NYPD vehicle on Port Richmond Avenue. In a reckless move, he crashed his Nissan into the police car and then proceeded to shoot at the vehicle, damaging it but missing the officers inside.

Despite the danger they faced, the officers did not return fire, as confirmed by the NYPD. It’s important to note that the second police vehicle was not actively pursuing the suspect – he simply crossed paths with them after fleeing the initial traffic stop.

Following the incident, the suspect, who is currently on parole for assault in Manhattan, was apprehended. Police discovered two firearms inside the Nissan during the arrest. While the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, he did not sustain any serious injuries.

As of Sunday night, the suspect’s identity has not been released by the authorities, pending formal charges.
