Trump Expresses Willingness to Join Talks Between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey
President Donald Trump has expressed his openness to participating in talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey, a move that has been welcomed by Kyiv as a positive step towards ending the ongoing conflict. The suggestion came as international efforts intensified to bring about peace in the region.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump mentioned the possibility of flying to Turkey to take part in the planned discussions between the two warring parties. He stated, “Thereās a possibility of it, I guess, if I think things can happen, but weāve got to get it done.”
Previous remarks made by Trump regarding direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv were seen as potentially beneficial for both countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for the US president’s willingness to be part of the meeting in Turkey, describing it as the “right idea” that could lead to significant progress.
The offer from Trump to join the talks comes at a crucial time as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine have intensified. Following meetings in Kyiv over the weekend with leaders from Germany, the UK, France, and Poland, a call was made for Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire or face severe consequences.
Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by suggesting direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul without any preconditions. Trump, in turn, urged Ukraine to agree to the talks immediately, emphasizing the importance of exploring the possibility of a deal.
Zelenskyy accepted the invitation for talks in Istanbul, challenging Putin to attend the meeting in person. The two leaders had previously met in Paris in 2019 but failed to reach a peace agreement.
While it remains unclear whether Putin will attend the proposed meeting, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan has agreed to host the discussions in Istanbul. However, the Russian government has rejected the precondition of a 30-day ceasefire, calling it an unacceptable ultimatum.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Putin’s participation, Zelenskyy has confirmed his attendance at the talks, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to the peace process. Turkey, known for its diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine, has played a key role in facilitating negotiations between the two countries.
The renewed push for peace comes amidst a spring offensive by Russian forces, with attacks reported in several strategic cities in eastern Ukraine. Despite a supposed ceasefire, Ukrainian analysts have noted a continued escalation of hostilities by Russian troops.
As efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine intensify, the international community remains hopeful that dialogue and diplomacy will pave the way for a lasting peace in the region.
