An unfortunate incident took place outside a Bronx charter school on Monday evening, resulting in the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl who was shot in the head. The incident unfolded as a dispute between two groups escalated outside the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School, with a member of one group opening fire and striking the innocent bystander.

Despite efforts by one of the victim’s friends to shield her during the gunfire, the teen could not be saved and was rushed to Lincoln Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Home Avenue and Tinton Avenue outside the charter school, which caters to students from grades six through 12.

The senseless killing of the teen marks the first murder in the 42nd Precinct this year. Despite this tragic event, the Bronx has seen a significant decrease in violent crime in the first quarter of the year, with a nearly 30% drop in murders and shootings borough-wide compared to last year.

Authorities recovered three shell casings at the scene of the fatal shooting and continue to investigate the incident. As of Monday evening, no arrests have been made, and the shooter remains at large.

Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the press at the scene, expressing their condolences and commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice. The community mourns the loss of the young girl and hopes for swift justice in this heartbreaking case.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in our communities and the need for continued efforts to address and prevent such senseless acts. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
