An Aurora resident has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in Parker in 2023. According to court documents, Tory Conyers, 46, was found guilty by a Douglas County jury in February on charges including leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide, assault, reckless driving, theft, and eluding police.

Judge Megan Brewer of Douglas County District Court handed down the sentence on Monday, which is four years less than the maximum possible penalty for the offenses committed.

The incident took place on August 21, 2023, when Conyers stole merchandise from a Walmart in Parker and attempted to evade police officers in the parking lot. Despite law enforcement calling off the pursuit for safety reasons, Conyers proceeded to run a red light at the intersection of Parker Road and Lincoln Avenue, resulting in the death of 51-year-old pedestrian Jossy Fernando Pinto. Conyers then fled the scene.

Two days later, Conyers was apprehended by Parker police officers and an Aurora SWAT team. Deputy District Attorney Jon Steinberg of the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office remarked, “Tory Conyers made a series of reckless decisions that led to the tragic death of an innocent individual. While he tried to flee accountability, justice prevailed with his conviction.”
