The Center for the Preservation of Artists’ Legacies (CPAL) is dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by contemporary visual artists in preserving their life’s work and legacy. While wealthy artists can establish endowed foundations to safeguard their artistic heritage, many underrecognized or financially disadvantaged artists do not have the means to ensure the preservation of their work for future generations. This often results in their artistic legacy being neglected or even lost.
Without proper guidance and support, the task of archiving and managing artists’ legacies falls to family members who may lack the expertise to handle such responsibilities. Galleries and museums may not always prioritize these matters, leading to valuable artworks being discarded or forgotten. This neglect contributes to a skewed representation of art history, with the contributions of lesser-known artists being overlooked.
CPAL seeks to promote equity in the stewardship of artistic legacies by developing innovative solutions that address the unique challenges faced by each individual artist. Through its work, CPAL aims to ensure that all artists, regardless of their recognition or financial status, have the opportunity to preserve their legacy in a meaningful way.
You are invited to join CPAL at their third annual conference on preserving artists’ legacies, taking place on June 2-4, 2025. The event will be held both in person at the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and virtually via Zoom. The conference will explore key themes over the course of three days:
Day 1: Represent
This day will delve into how major private and institutional collections are curated and managed, shedding light on the process of representing artists who have passed away. The discussions will focus on how collections shape our understanding of the artistic canon and the criteria for inclusion in established archives.
Day 2: Preserve
Participants will learn about the essential methodologies for protecting artists’ estates, including preserving artwork and archives. Topics such as legal considerations, financial planning, insurance, and best practices for gifting and donations will be covered in depth.
Day 3: Sustain
The final day will emphasize the importance of sustaining artistic legacies through collaborative efforts. Prominent artists and gallerists will share their approaches to maintaining and promoting their legacy, highlighting the role of the art community in supporting these efforts.
The conference will feature a diverse lineup of speakers, including Joy Glidden, Executive Director of CPAL, Susan Reynolds from the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation, and other renowned figures in the art world. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with experts in various fields related to art preservation and legacy management.
