Legal residents of the United States being sent to foreign prisons without due process is a shocking violation of their rights. Additionally, students being detained after voicing their opinions is a concerning trend that goes against the principles of free speech. Even federal judges being threatened with impeachment for ruling against the administration’s priorities sets a dangerous precedent for the independence of the judiciary.

In a recent Opinion video featuring Marci Shore, Timothy Snyder, and Jason Stanley, all professors at Yale and experts in authoritarianism, they discuss why America is particularly susceptible to democratic backsliding. This vulnerability has led them to make the difficult decision to leave the United States and take up positions at the University of Toronto.

Professor Stanley, in particular, is leaving as an act of protest against the Trump administration’s attacks on civil liberties. He emphasizes that this is a democratic emergency that Americans need to be aware of. Professor Shore, who has extensively studied authoritarianism in Central and Eastern Europe, is leaving due to her concerns about the regression of American democracy. She likens the situation to people on the Titanic believing the ship cannot sink, emphasizing that no system is immune to collapse.

On the other hand, Professor Snyder’s decision to leave is primarily to support his wife, Professor Shore, and their children, as well as to teach at a university where conversations about freedom can still thrive. However, he shares the same concerns as his colleagues about the state of democracy in the United States.

Their collective analysis highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing threats to the rule of law, the courts, and universities. Ignoring or downplaying these attacks could have dire consequences for the future of democracy in America.

It is crucial to heed the warnings of these experts and take action to protect democratic values. The United States must remain vigilant against any erosion of civil liberties and the rule of law to ensure a strong and resilient democracy for future generations.
