As a historian specializing in totalitarianism and fascist rhetoric, I have dedicated the past twenty-five years to studying the darkest chapters of history. Recently, alarming headlines such as “Experts say the constitutional crisis is here now,” “The Trump administration deporting hundreds of men without a trial,” and “A massive purge at the F.B.I.” have underscored the urgency of understanding and resisting authoritarian tendencies.

The current political climate has prompted me to make the decision to relocate to the University of Toronto, where I can pursue my research without fear of reprisal for my words. Drawing lessons from the events of 1933, I firmly believe in the importance of recognizing warning signs early and taking action before it’s too late. I have long warned others about the potential consequences of a Trump presidency, and the recent developments only serve to validate those concerns.

One crucial lesson that can be gleaned from Russian history is the importance of establishing centers of resistance in locations of relative safety. By organizing and preparing for potential political crises, we can ensure that Americans are equipped to navigate challenging times ahead. While some may view leaving the United States or American universities as a drastic measure, there are valid reasons for such decisions.

The prevailing narrative of American exceptionalism has historically fostered complacency, with many believing that fascism could never take root in the United States. However, this mindset can dangerously limit our understanding of freedom and democracy. As renowned author Toni Morrison astutely observed, the descent into authoritarianism is often marked by incremental steps that erode fundamental rights and values.

Russian words such as “proizvol” and “prodazhnost” offer valuable insight into the current state of affairs in the United States, where a sense of helplessness and corruption pervades society. Instances of arbitrary actions, such as the revocation of a Tufts student’s visa for expressing dissent, highlight the deliberate tactics employed to instill fear and division.

As we witness the normalization of depravity, sadism, and cruelty in political discourse, it becomes imperative to question our own boundaries and values. The importance of democratic institutions, including the media, universities, and courts, cannot be understated in safeguarding against authoritarianism.

Reflecting on recent events, it is evident that creating a platform for positive change requires active participation and engagement. By upholding democratic values and fostering a culture of resistance, we can strive towards a society where none of us have to constantly justify our safety. The path to a more just and equitable future begins with each individual’s commitment to defending democracy and human rights.
