Seven Questions for EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin as He Testifies Before Congress

The upcoming testimony of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin before Congress has raised concerns about the decimation of crucial environmental protections. Zeldin’s actions have led to massive staffing and budget cuts, weakening of agency science, and loopholes for polluters, putting our air, water, and soil at risk.

The administration’s rhetoric labeling environmental protection as excessive or radical is a dangerous distortion, aiming to discredit science and strip communities of essential protections. President Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2026 includes a staggering 54.5% cut to EPA funding, endangering programs for clean water, hazardous waste cleanup, and air quality monitoring in National Parks.

Despite overwhelming public support for EPA funding, Congress has not resisted Trump’s budget cuts. Zeldin’s actions prioritize big polluters over public health, disregarding bipartisan support for environmental protections. These cuts threaten to increase asthma rates, contaminate water systems, and delay toxic site cleanups, returning EPA funding to levels not seen since the agency’s inception.

Zeldin’s disregard for science-based protections is evident in his efforts to undermine scientific expertise at EPA. By silencing scientific input, the administration avoids addressing pollution’s harmful impacts and climate change consequences, favoring industry profits over public health.

The dismantling of EPA’s environmental justice programs under Zeldin’s leadership is concerning. Overburdened communities, predominantly low-income and minority populations, face increased health risks from pollution. Zeldin’s cuts to environmental justice grants and programs leave vulnerable communities without support, prioritizing legal battles over public health.

The administration’s rollback of clean air and water protections threatens public health, with potential impacts on asthma rates and premature deaths. By dismantling EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation and climate-related programs, Zeldin puts industry interests above public health, jeopardizing progress in addressing climate change and pollution.

Congress must hold Zeldin accountable for his actions, rejecting harmful budget cuts and restoring critical EPA funding. By reaffirming the federal commitment to public health, environmental justice, and scientific integrity, lawmakers can prevent further damage to our environment and public health. Inaction under Zeldin’s leadership risks subverting the agency’s mission and prioritizing polluting industry interests over public well-being. It’s crucial for Congress to act to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment from long-term harm.
