Crime rates aboard cruise ships leaving the US have surged to a two-year high, sparking concerns among travelers and industry experts. According to data from the Department of Transportation, there were 48 reported crimes onboard cruise ships from January 1, 2025, to March 30, 2025. Among these incidents, 23 were reported as rapes, 10 as sexual assaults, and seven as assaults, all occurring on cruise ships.

Robert McDonald, a former Secret Service special agent and criminal justice lecturer at the University of New Haven, expressed his worries about the impact of these crimes on the cruise industry. McDonald, who has vast experience in coordinating security for dignitaries worldwide, highlighted the negative repercussions of such incidents on the industry’s reputation and public perception.

McDonald attributed the higher prevalence of crimes on cruises to the concentration of large numbers of people in a confined space. He noted that when people gather in large groups, especially in settings involving alcohol and relaxation from their usual routine, the likelihood of incidents escalating increases. This phenomenon is not unique to cruise ships but applies to any scenario where crowds congregate.

One disturbing case that made headlines involved two illegal immigrants who were arrested for allegedly molesting a minor on a Royal Caribbean cruise departing from Miami. Jose Prudencio Diaz and Ricardo Daniel Mondragon Leal were charged with child molestation and exhibition after an incident on the Independence of the Seas ship. The victim, a 14-year-old boy, reported that Diaz and Leal exposed themselves and forced him to engage in sexual acts.

In another incident, a brawl broke out among passengers disembarking from a Carnival Cruise Line ship at the Port of Galveston on April 26. Video footage captured the chaotic scene as passengers pushed and engaged in physical altercations. Carnival Cruise Line took swift action by placing 24 passengers on a “do not sail list,” banning them from future trips with the company. A Carnival spokesperson emphasized zero tolerance for violence and handed the matter over to law enforcement.

These recent events highlight the pressing need for enhanced security measures and vigilance within the cruise industry. As authorities investigate these incidents and cruise lines implement stricter protocols, passengers are advised to remain cautious and report any suspicious behavior. Ultimately, ensuring the safety and well-being of travelers remains a top priority for cruise operators and law enforcement agencies.

For further updates or comments on these incidents, Fox News Digital has reached out to Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean for their responses.
