Sony has finally unveiled the highly anticipated WH-1000XM6 noise cancelling headphones, setting the stage for what could be the top headphones of 2025. While Sony typically releases a new model every two years, the previous 5-star XM5 model was launched in May 2022, making the wait for the XM6 even more exciting for fans of the 1000X series.
The WH-1000XM6 boasts Sony’s most advanced noise cancelling technology yet, thanks to a next-gen chipset and intelligent algorithms. The new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 is seven times faster than its predecessor and utilizes 12 microphones – 1.5 times more than the XM5 – to adapt to your environment in real-time and block distractions before they reach you. Additionally, the AI beamforming enhances call quality for clearer communication.
In terms of audio quality, Sony has equipped the WH-1000XM6 with specially designed drivers featuring a high rigidity carbon fiber composite material dome and a uniquely developed voice coil structure. Collaborating with Grammy-winning and nominated engineers like Randy Merrill and Chris Gehringer ensures that the sound quality meets the standards set by the artists themselves. Features like High-Resolution Audio Wireless, LDAC, and DSEE Extreme are also included.
The design of the WH-1000XM6 remains familiar yet refined, with a wider headband made of vegan leather and stretchable earpads for a secure and comfortable fit. The headphones feature an updated folding mechanism with a metal injection construction and a carry case with magnetic closure for added convenience.
A standout feature of the XM6 is Scene-based Listening, which uses sensing technology to automatically adjust music playback based on your activity and customize the noise cancelling level according to your surroundings. The headphones also offer faster USB-C charging, providing up to three hours of usage with just three minutes of charging.
Unfortunately, the WH-1000XM6 comes with a price increase, now retailing at £400, marking a £20 rise from its predecessor. The headphones are set to go on sale this month in Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue color options. With its advanced features and top-notch technology, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is poised to be a game-changer in the world of noise cancelling headphones.
