Joe Rogan Discusses Government Manipulation of Social Media with Expert
In a recent episode of his podcast, Joe Rogan engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with Harvard professor and expert on psychological manipulation, Rebecca Lemov. Within moments, they plunged into Rogan’s preferred subject: the pervasive influence of government on our online interactions.
Rogan kicked off the dialogue by stating, “There are so many different kinds of mind control.” He elaborated, emphasizing that a significant portion of social media interactions and debates is anything but organic. “It’s not real,” he asserted. “It’s state-run and state-funded, whether from foreign entities, our own government, or even corporations. What you’re witnessing is a manufactured discourse, a form of mind control.”
Lemov expanded on Rogan’s observations, noting that even when individuals recognize something as fake, their brains still react as though it were genuine. “Studies have demonstrated that we respond emotionally as if it were organic and real,” she explained. A simple ‘like’ on a post, she noted, triggers a reaction akin to face-to-face interaction.
However, the influence extends beyond governmental entities; the platforms themselves are built to manipulate our emotions. “At the core, there’s an emotional engineering embedded in these platforms that doesn’t even necessitate government involvement,” she stated.
DARPA’s Role in Digital Emotional Manipulation
Lemov peeled back the layers surrounding DARPA, the controversial agency behind many technological advancements, revealing its significant role in crafting the digital landscape we navigate today. She explained that DARPA was instrumental not only in developing the internet but also in pioneering emotional manipulation techniques on a global scale. “They have funded numerous studies that delve into the mechanics of emotional contagion,” she remarked.
Her focus wasn’t solely on the technologies themselves, but rather on their applications: “I became intrigued by how social media connects to brainwashing episodes, creating states of emotional contagion that don’t necessarily aim to change thoughts but rather how we feel about those thoughts.” The emotional shifts she described mirror tactics commonly employed by cults, leading her to conclude, “It’s not about altering my beliefs; it’s about altering my feelings regarding those beliefs.”
The Disturbing Facebook Experiment
At this juncture, Lemov revealed a chilling chapter in the annals of Big Tech: a covert Facebook experiment that manipulated the emotions of nearly 700,000 unsuspecting users. “In a notorious 2012 study published in 2014, Facebook disclosed that they had achieved mass emotional contagion,” she informed Rogan. The experiment involved altering users’ newsfeeds without their consent, exposing one group to a more negative emotional environment and observing the repercussions through behavioral analytics.
“The results were unsettling,” she noted. “Users subjected to negative newsfeeds displayed a marked increase in negative emotional responses, while those exposed to positivity showed a statistically significant rise in positive interactions.” This indicated that Facebook wasn’t just observing user emotions; they were actively cultivating them, all without any prior warning.
The Fallout and Lack of Accountability
Shockingly, the full scope of this experiment didn’t emerge until two years later, when the research team publicly acknowledged their manipulation of 689,003 users’ feeds by selectively removing either positive or negative posts. For those who experienced a downturn in their emotional well-being during early 2012, the possibility of being unwitting participants in this study looms large.
One particularly haunting response from a user highlighted the gravity of the situation. A user reached out to the research team, questioning whether their involvement in the experiment could have influenced their mental state during a crisis. “I was in the emergency room, contemplating suicide,” the user wrote, “and I want to know if my feed was altered and possibly pushed me over the edge.” Unfortunately, no method existed to trace their exposure, leaving many questions unanswered.
The public outcry that followed led to an investigation by the British government, considering sanctions due to the global implications of the study. Yet, in the end, no one faced repercussions. “Ultimately, there appears to have been no accountability for those involved,” Lemov lamented.
With no warnings issued, no sanctions imposed, and a veil of secrecy still draped over the practices of social media companies, the lingering question remains: how many more such experiments are occurring right now, hidden in plain sight?
