Plastic contamination in ice cream is never a good thing. Recently, Wells Dairy, also known as Wells Enterprises, issued a voluntary recall of 22 different ice cream and frozen yogurt products due to potential contamination with plastic material. This recall was initiated on April 25, affecting over 17,000 tubs of various flavors.

The recalled products include popular flavors such as Rocky Road, Mocha Almond Fudge, and Peanut Butter ‘N Fudge ice cream, as well as frozen yogurt options like Planet Smoothie ZSA Vanilla Fat Free. These products have “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March 2026 to October 2026. If you have any of these products, it is advised to return them for a refund or discard them properly to prevent accidental ingestion.

Ingesting small plastic fragments from contaminated ice cream may not necessarily result in serious health consequences. The FDA classified this recall as Class II, indicating that the probability of serious adverse health effects is remote. Most likely, the plastic fragments are small and dull enough to pass safely through the gastrointestinal tract within a few days.

However, it is always recommended to contact a healthcare professional if you suspect that you have ingested any plastic. Symptoms such as chest or abdominal discomfort, bloating, fever, blood in the stool, or coughing up blood should be reported immediately. While small amounts of plastic may not be toxic, it is essential to seek medical advice if any concerning symptoms arise.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of health consequences from plastic contaminants in Wells Dairy products so far. Accidentally ingesting rocky road ice cream from Wells may not lead to a rocky road for consumers. It is crucial to follow the recall guidelines and dispose of the affected products properly to ensure safety and prevent any potential health risks.
