Crime rates have been on the rise in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx and Queens district since she took office in 2019. Major crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft, have increased by a staggering 70% in her district, which is more than double the citywide increase of 30% over the same period.

The 110th Precinct in Queens, which covers part of the notorious “Market of Sweethearts” human-trafficking and prostitution hub on Roosevelt Avenue, saw a 105% surge in major crimes, the highest increase of any precinct in the city. The 115th Precinct, which also serves areas like Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, and north Corona, saw an 85% increase in major offenses.

Residents in these neighborhoods have expressed frustration with the lack of action from Ocasio-Cortez. Some blame her for the increasing lawlessness and deteriorating safety in their communities. One resident, Guadelupe Alvarez, shared her disappointment in the lawmaker, stating that she feels pushed out of her neighborhood due to the crime and lack of response from Ocasio-Cortez.

Despite pleas from constituents and calls for federal intervention to address the public safety emergency, Ocasio-Cortez has remained silent on the rising crime rates in her district. Critics argue that her anti-police rhetoric has contributed to the recruitment crisis at the NYPD, making it difficult to address the crime surge effectively.

Ocasio-Cortez’s focus on defunding the police and her dismissal of concerns about rising crime levels have drawn criticism from experts and residents alike. The lack of action and response from the lawmaker has left many feeling unsafe and abandoned in their own neighborhoods.

The analysis of NYPD crime data for Ocasio-Cortez’s district shows a concerning trend of increasing major crimes. Despite repeated attempts to address the issue, Ocasio-Cortez’s office has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.

In conclusion, the rising crime rates in Ocasio-Cortez’s district highlight the need for effective policing and community support. Residents are calling for action and accountability from their elected representative to ensure the safety and well-being of their neighborhoods.
