DuPage County Judge Denies Detention for Man Accused of Robbing USPS Mail Carrier

In a surprising turn of events, a DuPage County judge has refused to detain a man accused of robbing a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier at gunpoint. Despite the serious allegations, Judge Joshua Dieden cited the significant passage of time since the incident and the defendant’s clean criminal record as reasons for denying the state’s detention petition, as reported by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Details of the Robbery

According to prosecutors, the incident took place in Hinsdale on May 9, 2022, when an armed individual approached a mail carrier emptying collection boxes. The gunman threatened the postal worker with a gun and demanded the victim’s master key, which grants access to multiple collection boxes in the area.

Following the robbery, the suspect, accompanied by 22-year-old Antwan Kelsor from Chicago, fled the scene in a black Nissan. Subsequently, the stolen key was used to pilfer mail in Hinsdale and Oak Brook over the ensuing weeks.

Arrest and Recovery of Stolen Property

Approximately a month later, Kelsor and 23-year-old Maurice Deloach were apprehended in Oakbrook Terrace after using the stolen key to steal mail in the area. Upon executing a search warrant on the Nissan, investigators discovered the master key, along with stolen mail and checks taken from the postal system.

Furthermore, Kelsor and Deloach are accused of attempting to sell stolen checks, depositing them, and withdrawing funds from the compromised accounts. The investigation led to the recovery of checks amounting to $508,714.88.
