The Shocking Hit-and-Run Incident on Chicago’s South Side

A tragic hit-and-run incident on the South Side of Chicago claimed the life of a 76-year-old pedestrian this week. The driver responsible for this fatal accident not only fled the scene but also displayed shocking behavior when confronted by law enforcement officers.

According to a Chicago police report, officers discovered the victim lying in the traffic lanes near 70th and Western Avenue around 9:23 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a silver vehicle speeding north on Western when it struck the pedestrian before driving off.

About 30 minutes later, police at the crash scene observed a silver Hyundai Santa Fe with significant front-end damage and a cracked windshield pass by. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver, identified as 29-year-old Nyamca Tolefree, displayed unusual behavior before finally pulling over. Shockingly, officers found a piece of the victim’s hair embedded in the windshield, along with Svedka vodka bottles in the car.

During the arrest, Tolefree exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, a strong smell of alcohol, and difficulty maintaining balance. She even urinated on herself while being transported to the hospital in a squad car. Despite these indications, she refused sobriety tests and repeatedly mentioned being involved in a crash while driving.

Although Tolefree was not charged with driving under the influence, she faces multiple charges, including failure to report a fatal accident, transporting alcohol as a driver, failure to exercise due care, and failure to reduce speed. Judge Luciano Panici, Jr., ordered her to be detained pending trial.
