Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) Firenze has recently announced the launch of its new Master of Arts in Interior and Furniture Design program titled “Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials.” This innovative program aims to redefine the intersection of heritage and innovation by bringing together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Students enrolled in this program will learn to critically reinterpret cultural and material heritage through a sustainable lens, with a focus on design as a transformative force that addresses social and ecological challenges.

The Master of Arts program at IED Firenze equips students with the necessary skills to “hack” tradition by decoding artisanal methods, rethinking materials, and innovating applications. By fostering a dialogue between the past and the future, craftsmanship becomes a space for reinvention. The curriculum integrates DesignXCommons, an ecological design philosophy that emphasizes sustainability and resource regeneration. Students will have the opportunity to engage in workshops, industry collaborations, and real-world projects, allowing them to turn cultural contexts into design innovation.

This program complements IED Firenze’s existing Master of Arts in Textile Design program, which focuses on sustainable materials, eco-design, and process innovation across fashion, interiors, and product design. Together, these programs position IED Firenze as a leader in sustainable design education. Located in Florence, a city known for its rich history, art, and fashion, IED Firenze offers a unique learning environment where students can draw inspiration from the city’s cultural heritage. Housed in an architectural landmark, IED Firenze nurtures designers who are ready to challenge conventions, honor heritage, and shape the future of design.

Founded in 1966, IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) is an international network of higher education institutions specializing in design, fashion, visual arts, and communication. With campuses in Italy, Spain, and Brazil, IED offers a multidisciplinary approach to education that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and technological innovation. Through hands-on training and strong industry connections, IED prepares students to become forward-thinking professionals in the global design landscape.
