Soccer pundit Gary Lineker will be leaving the BBC earlier than expected due to an antisemitism controversy, the broadcaster has confirmed.
Last week, Lineker shared a post on social media about Zionism that included an illustration of a rat, a symbol historically associated with antisemitism. Lineker issued an apology, stating that he would never knowingly share anything antisemitic.
In a statement released on Monday, the BBC announced that Lineker will step down from his presenting role following the conclusion of Match of the Day for the 2024/25 season. He will not be part of the BBC’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup or next season’s FA Cup coverage.
BBC director-general Tim Davie expressed that Lineker has acknowledged his mistake and, as a result, they have mutually agreed that he will step back from further presenting duties after this season. Davie praised Lineker’s contribution to football coverage over the past two decades, highlighting his passion and knowledge that have earned him respect from sports fans in the UK and beyond.
In response, Lineker stated that football has been a significant part of his life, both on the pitch and in the studio. He emphasized his deep care for the game and the work he has done with the BBC, expressing regret for the error and upset caused by the recent controversy. Lineker acknowledged the need to step back as a responsible course of action.
This incident is not the first time Lineker has found himself in hot water. In 2023, he faced backlash for criticizing the government’s asylum policy, resulting in a suspension from hosting duties for several days for breaching BBC’s social media guidelines.
Earlier this month, Lineker also made comments criticizing the new boss of BBC Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, questioning his television experience and advising against changes to Match of the Day.
During an interview with the BBC’s Amol Rajan, Lineker hinted that the BBC may have wanted him to leave as he negotiated a new contract last year.
When asked about Lineker’s recent social media post, BBC director-general Tim Davie stressed the importance of presenters upholding BBC values and following social media policies to maintain the broadcaster’s reputation.
