The integration of artificial intelligence into the realm of sexuality is a topic that is gaining momentum as technology continues to advance. From providing sex education and therapy to facilitating digital relationships and erotic content, generative AI is reshaping how we engage with intimacy in today’s digital age.

A comprehensive review published in Current Sexual Health Reports has compiled five years’ worth of research from 88 publications and 106 studies, shedding light on how the general population utilizes AI in various aspects of sexual life. The report delves into four key domains: information-seeking, therapeutic support, romantic interaction, and erotic expression, highlighting both the potential benefits and ethical challenges associated with the integration of AI in these areas.

AI is now being used as an educational tool, with large language models like ChatGPT providing quick and anonymous answers to a wide range of sexual health questions. While this on-demand access offers privacy and immediacy, concerns regarding bias and accuracy persist, particularly in sensitive topics such as abortion and LGBTQ+ health.

In the realm of therapy, AI-enabled chatbots and digital intimacy coaches are being utilized to provide support for a variety of issues, including relational stress and sexual dysfunction. While these tools have shown promise in reducing stigma and providing emotional relief, there are concerns about users developing emotional dependencies and unrealistic expectations from these AI therapists.

The rise of human-AI romantic and sexual relationships is another area of exploration, with AI entities like Replika offering emotional comfort and companionship to users. While these interactions can mitigate loneliness and provide sexual gratification, there are also risks of emotional dependency and reinforcement of gendered power dynamics within these relationships.

One of the most alarming trends highlighted in the review is the proliferation of AI-generated non-consensual pornography, known as AI-generated image-based sexual abuse (AI-IBSA). This unethical practice involves creating explicit content by digitally grafting real individuals’ faces onto bodies without their consent, leading to severe psychological distress and reputational damage for victims.

While AI has the potential to revolutionize intimacy and connection, it is crucial to establish ethical frameworks and consent protocols to safeguard against misuse and harm. By prioritizing transparency, inclusivity, and ethical literacy in the development and deployment of AI technologies in the intimacy space, we can ensure that these tools amplify human connection with care and respect.

In conclusion, the future of intimacy will not be solely determined by code but by the values and principles we embed within these technologies. As we navigate this evolving landscape of digital intimacy, it is essential to prioritize ethical considerations and human well-being in the design and implementation of AI solutions in the realm of sexuality.
