Pratt’s Graduating Class Showcase: A Blend of Creativity and Innovation

This year, Pratt Institute’s graduating class showcased their work in two unique formats. Thirty-three students participated in an exhibition, while another 30 sent their creations down the runway. The event kicked off with the presentation of the Visionary Award to British menswear designer Nicholas Daley, who was recognized for his outstanding work over the past decade by Will Welch of GQ.

The show opened with menswear designer Haeone Son, who brought a fresh perspective to traditional staples like shirts and pants. Son used a unique dyeing method to create trompe l’oeil effects, adding a sophisticated touch to his designs. Xinjun Lu drew inspiration from music for her clinical white collection, incorporating intricate thread stitching.

Softness was a common theme throughout the showcase, evident in the collections of designers like Ruoshui Wang, Yunru Huang, Phobe Mang, Kylei Casmire, and Griselda Peña Candelario. Candelario’s collection, in particular, blended fabrics from different backgrounds as a reflection of her Mexican/American heritage. Yalei Fang combined elements of the Chinese qipao with ’90s New York vibes for a unique twist.

Exploring subcultures, designer Georgia James drew inspiration from the Kibbo Kift group, known for their focus on nature and handicraft. Christen Lee challenged traditional fashion norms by incorporating outsider art into her designs, while Joy Qiu’s “I’m A Punk Bunny” collection showcased a range of personalities, from cute to creepy.

Character dressing took center stage with Jihae Heidi Du’s collection, featuring her interpretation of “Drama Yoshiko,” a female spy. Xin Gu drew on his experiences with autistic individuals to create designs that challenged societal norms. Noah Luca Weisberg drew inspiration from his middle school years to create a cast of characters, including a humorous take on bullying with his anti-pantsing shorts.

The showcase was a testament to the creativity and innovation of Pratt Institute’s graduating class. Each designer brought a unique perspective to the runway, showcasing their talents and pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion. The event was a true celebration of artistry and talent, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
