A tragic story unfolded in Brooklyn Supreme Court as Claudia Banton, a cold-blooded killer, was sentenced to 23 years to life for the murder of her childhood friend, Delia Johnson. The motive behind the shocking slaying remains a mystery, leaving Johnson’s grieving family in disbelief at the lack of remorse shown by the convicted murderer.

During the sentencing hearing, Johnson’s brother, Mathis Lemons, spoke out, expressing the family’s pain and anger towards Banton. He described the heinous act as pure evil and demanded that Banton never see the outside world again. Johnson’s daughter, Ladeya Jenkins, also addressed Banton, expressing her disbelief and hurt at the betrayal by someone they once considered family.

The courtroom was filled with emotion as Johnson’s sister, Khadijah Berry, shared her heartbreak over the loss of her sister and the betrayal by a friend. The family struggled to come to terms with the fact that the person they once welcomed into their home had committed such a horrific act.

Banton was convicted of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for the execution-style killing that took place outside a friend’s funeral in Crown Heights. The brutal shooting, which was captured on surveillance footage, shocked onlookers as Banton shot Johnson multiple times without showing any hesitation.

Despite the overwhelming evidence against her, Banton remained stoic throughout the trial and sentencing, showing no emotion or remorse for her actions. The chilling police bodycam footage captured Johnson’s final moments, as she lay wounded and gasping for air after being shot by Banton.

After initially evading capture, Banton was eventually tracked down by US Marshals in Jacksonville, Florida, where she had changed her appearance and gone into hiding. The motive behind the senseless killing remains unknown, leaving Johnson’s family grappling with the betrayal and loss of their beloved daughter and sister.

As the sentencing came to a close, Johnson’s mother, Delia Berry, tearfully addressed Banton, recalling the pain of seeing her daughter’s killer in chains and expressing her profound disappointment in someone they had once cared for. The family’s grief and anger were palpable in the courtroom as they struggled to make sense of the senseless tragedy that had befallen them.
