I recently came across a controversial video on SkinnyTok that caught my attention. User Monica Cruz, also known as Succulent Addict, made some fatphobic comments about the presence of overweight individuals in Pilates classes. As a plus-sized person who attends Pilates classes regularly, I felt compelled to address the issue.

In her video, Cruz stated that individuals weighing 200 pounds or more should not be allowed in Pilates classes, and that instructors should not be overweight. These comments struck a chord with me, as they perpetuate harmful stereotypes and promote body shaming. It’s important to note that a large percentage of the population in America struggles with obesity, and everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in fitness activities without judgment.

When I first started attending Pilates classes at my local studio in Los Angeles, I was apprehensive. As someone who had always felt out of place in athletic settings, I was nervous about being surrounded by more experienced participants. However, I quickly realized that Pilates is a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all shapes and sizes.

As a curvy woman who weighs just under 300 pounds, I understand the challenges of participating in group fitness classes. While I may not be able to perform every move perfectly, I have learned to listen to my body and modify exercises as needed. The focus is not on perfection or comparison, but on personal growth and self-care.

Over the years, I have come to appreciate the benefits of Pilates for both my physical and mental well-being. It has helped me build strength, improve flexibility, and boost my confidence. Rather than focusing on unrealistic standards or external judgments, I prioritize my own health and happiness.

In conclusion, it is crucial to challenge fatphobia and promote body positivity in all aspects of life, including fitness. Everyone deserves the opportunity to engage in physical activity without fear of discrimination or ridicule. Let’s create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all individuals to prioritize their health and well-being.
